An Introduction to Renewable Energy Sources : Eco Articles

See I am always on the
move for fun info on
Alternative Energy Sources. Today, I
ran into a really
sweet information that talks over Eco Energy Sources from a new
light. Today’s article is titled An Introduction to Renewable Energy Sources .

Article by Rick DeLancey

Renewable energy is all around us.

The sun, wind, rivers, lakes, oceans, plant growth, or even the heat deep within the earth is renewable energy. Modern technology has started to harness these endless sources of power by converting these into electricity, transport fuels, and the heating of our homes and water. They have the potential to completely replace conventional fuels. There is overwhelming scientific evidence that the use of conventional fuels is the main cause of climate change. In spite of this justifying the cost of a new infrastructure is a source of heated debate. People are creatures of habit and will resist change even when it is in their best interests. Now is the time for action with the certainty that we are doing the right thing. Let any who would sow doubt be rebuked with the facts.

Using the power of moving water to generate electricity is renewable energy.

Hydroelectric dams are a form of renewable energy we are all familiar with. New technology is being developed to generate electricity from tidal and wave energy. This will create the potential of 12,380 miles of U.S coastline to selectively be put to use creating a new power supply. This is a reliable constant motion that can help solve our energy problems. It is renewable energy in pure form. The cycles of water here on planet earth were in motion long before man and will continue indefinitely.

The kinetic energy of air in motion or wind energy is also renewable energy in pure form. It has been used for thousands of years in the form of sailboats and windmills. Now in modern times it is being used to generate electricity. Wind energy is directly affected by the topography of the land. The tops of smooth, rounded hills, open plains, shorelines, or mountain gaps that funnel the wind are the best spots for wind farms. Offshore is also excellent due to better wind speeds. Wind energy alone has the potential to supply total world demand 30 times over.

Geothermal heat within the earth is a massive renewable energy source.

It is 24 hour power and not intermittent like some other forms of renewable energy. The majority of the continental U.S. has 100 degrees Celsius under it. The western part of the country has large areas of 200 degrees Celsius apparently due to it sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire. Enhanced geothermal systems are a newer technology that could take advantage of this huge power source. Geothermal heat has the potential to supply total world demand 1.5 times over. As technology to extract it improves its potential will increase.

Radiant heat and light from the sun or solar energy is another massive renewable energy source. It is the source of energy that creates four other forms of renewable energy. Wind is caused by atmospheric convection which is fueled by the sun. Ocean waves are caused by the wind. Rivers are formed by precipitation caused by water evaporating due to heat from the sun. All the green and growing things depend on the energy from the sun and are the biomass we use as fuel. Solar energy has the potential to supply total world demand 4000 times over.

Solar energy is most well-known in the form of photovoltaic solar panels but this is only one form. There are two categories of solar technologies. Passive solar is designs that need no other energy. Solar architecture, green roofs, and solar chimneys are examples of passive solar. Active solar converts’ solar energy into other forms of energy, normally heat and electricity. Photovoltaic and concentrated solar power are examples of active solar. The variety of ways to use this renewable energy source and its simple availability sets it apart from the other forms.

Soil, water, and all living things are renewable energy if managed conservatively. All living things and the waste they produce collectively make up Biomass. Biomass as fuels is from five sources wood, alcohol fuels, garbage, landfill gases, and waste. Biofuels such as biodiesel and ethanol are produced from biomass. Using biomass as fuel does release carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere. In comparison to fossil fuels it releases less. Biomass as fuel also has the distinct advantage of being carbon that is in the modern cycle where fossil fuels are carbon from millions of years ago. Biochar which is made from biomass wastes is both a potential form of carbon sequestration and a good fertilizer.

Renewable energy is the way to go, regardless of which form of it is best for the region that you live in. Making the switch to renewable energy promotes living in balance and harmony with our environment. Creating and maintaining a new infrastructure will create jobs.

Different Ways in Which Solar Heating Systems Are Becoming Useful : Eco Articles

I am constantly on the
watch for quality stuff on
Alternative Energy Sources. Today, I
discovered a really
excellent article that talks
about Eco Energy Sources from a different
light. Today’s amazing article is titled Different Ways in Which Solar Heating Systems Are Becoming Useful .

Article by Anamika Swami

It is the most useful alternate source of energy available to the human race. The concerning issues like depleting fossil fuels and rising electricity costs have given a push to the popularity of it. These systems are constantly being improved to meet different heating requirements at homes and in industries as well.

Conventional heating systems that run on electricity, gas or oil are fast giving way to those running on solar energy. If you have a store dealing in heating systems, you may experience the rising demand of solar energy based heating systems very soon. It is the right time to learn about the advantages and applications of these systems.

What Make Them Advantageous?

Its offer a number of advantages over traditional heating systems. To begin with, solar energy is available for free and systems used to harness it too are affordable solutions. Going further, solar energy is a clean source for heating applications and doesn’t cause harm to the environment. Solar energy will remain throughout, even when the fossil fuels will completely vanish. Finally, these systems are easy to install and can operate uninterruptedly.

Active Solar Heating Systems

Solar energy can be harnessed in active and passive manners to run the heating systems at different locations. Its require setting up solar panels and other arrangements, while passive systems allow heating up through absorption of solar energy by walls and other objects. Active solar energy systems are more efficient and are preferred for various heating applications.

Solar Heating at Homes

There are many ways in which solar heating systems can be utilized at homes. One popular application is to heat water that can be utilized for bathing, washing dishes and many other purposes. Homeowners today also make use of these systems for floor and space heating. Conventional room heaters are no more appealing because of huge electricity costs and their contribution towards environment pollution. Solar heating arrangements provide great solutions for such drawbacks.

Heating swimming pools at homes is another application of these systems. Two types of solar heating systems used at homes are air and liquid based heating systems. As their names suggest, these systems either heat air or water to serve for various applications discussed above. Buildings with many floors can also take advantage of these systems.

Solar Heating in Industries

Many industries are finding it for great significance. These industries require either hot water or steam to carry out various operations and solar energy based systems provide good solutions in these directions. One good example is that of vegetable oil mills that need these systems for solvent extraction. Food processing and cold storage industries too need these systems. Wood seasoning in timber industry and pasteurization in milk processing industries are other applications that can make use of these systems.

As you can see, the number of applications for it is constantly increasing. You must obtain information about the innovative products being launched in this direction to let your store make benefit out of them.

If France can, why can't we? : Eco Answers

Well I am non stop on the
watch for interesting info on
Alternative Energy Sources. This evening, I
come across a very
amazing piece of content that talks
about Eco Energy Sources from a new
perspective. Today’s fun article is titled If France can, why can’t we? .
Question by : If France can, why can’t we?
According to the available data, France currently generates 70% + of its electricity using nuclear power. Yet here in the United States we haven’t broken ground for a new nuclear generating station in decades. We’re still using coal, oil and natural gas to generate electricity.

I can hear all the referneces to Chernobyl and Three Mile Island (TMI). Comparing the Russian reactors at Chernobyl to a then-current U.S. reactor is akin to comparing a skate board to a Ferrari. Our nuclear generating stations are immensely superior in every way to what the Russians built. As regards TMI, “Hanoi” Jane Fonda used it to promote her fantasy movie “The China Syndrome”. To the best of my knowledge there were no deaths as a result of the release at TMI and only minor injuries. The entire event at TMI was blown way out of proportion.

The environmental zealots are constantly attacking using coal, oil and natural gas and the mere mention of nuclear power causes them to hyperventilate and become hysterical.

Their mantra is “Solar power! Wind power! Clean energy! Renewable energy!” While I’ve no argument with using clean energy sources I do doubt the feasibility of their supposed “solutions”. Solar power is great – when the sun is shining. Wind power is wonderful – when the wind is blowing and if you don’t mind killing migratory birds. But what happens with solar power during a period of overcast skies or heavy snow? What if a wind farm has to be shut down due to icing or high winds?

Electricity is not easily stored for future use. Sure, we have batteries but they have their own set of problems. Batteries have to be manufactured and this requires energy, not to mention the environmental impact. Once their service life has expired batteries must be disposed of. Done improperly the result is environmental damage. Wet-cell batteries, like the one in your car, produce harmful fumes and can, under the right conditions, explode. Just think about having your basement full of lead acid batteries to store the electricity from your solar cells or wind turbine – knowing that the fumes being emitted are dangerous and the batteries could explode. Of course you could just do without electricity from dusk to dawn but I doubt we’ll see too many opting for that hardship.

So, in my opinion, we really have little choice except nuclear power generation. Oh, I can hear the howls of the environmentalists now as they babble about “How do we get rid of the spent fuel rods? They will be dangerous for hundreds or even thousands of years.” Obviously France has figured out what to do with their spent fuel rods. Perhaps we should ak them.

I believe that we have the technology to safely store spend fuel rods from nuclear generating stations. Lets look back in time to 1962 when JFK challenged the country to land a man on the moon and return him safely to earth. Engineering and design back then was done with a slide rule and a pencil. (The average 1996 car had more computing power under its hood than was available to the engineers and designers of the Apollo Project). Just look at bridges and highways built in the 1950′s and ’60′s – and still in use today. I simply refuse to believe that with our technological advances the safe storage of spent fuel rods is beyond our abilities.

As someone who has seen the ravages of strip mining and mountaintop removal I’ve no love for coal-fired generating stations. I’d rather see oil used to produce fuel for vehicles. Natural gas should be used for cooking and home heating.

I spent 3 1/2 years working in the pipe support group at a nuclear generating station construction site back in the ’80′s. Unfortunately, the owner simply ran out of money and the project was abandoned. During construction, the plan was to close 3 dirty coal-fired plants once the nuke went on line. Just think of what that would have done to improve air quality. I saw first-hand the numerous safety measures designed into the plant as well as the near-unbelievable redundancy. One feed water pump (used to supply cooling water to the reactor) was capable of being used to cool both reactors – and each reactor had a primary and reserve feed water pump. That is redundancy.

I believe we need a renewed dedication to nuclear power.

The Renewable Energy Challenge : Eco Articles

See I am non stop on the
move for quality ideas on
Alternative Energy Sources. Now, I
ran across a very
nice article that discusses Eco Energy Sources from a different
light. Today’s new post is titled The Renewable Energy Challenge .

Article by Chris Nelder

Will the U.S. Choose the Path to Profit, or the Freeway to Failure?

With the Copenhagen summit on climate change less than three months away, and governments the world over engaged in intensive discussions and preparations, it feels like we are finally standing at a true crossroads.

One direction leads to a vision of a sustainable future, with adequate energy, food, and water for all without compromising the welfare of future generations.

The other direction is a continuation of the path we’re currently on, which the vast preponderance of empirical evidence says is not sustainable, but which continues to be vigorously defended by vested interests.

Climate change is the headline purpose that brought us to this point, but choosing the sustainable path has far greater implications. As sustainable business proponent and founder of the carpet company Interface, Ray Anderson, put it in the introduction to his new book, Confessions of a Radical Industrialist:

“By survive, I mean business must be steered through a transition from an old and dangerously dysfunctional model to a far better one that will operate in balance and harmony with nature-thrive in a carbon-constrained world, and put down the threats of global climate disruption, species extinction, resource depletion, and environmental degradation. In a word, develop a business model that is sustainable.”

The sustainability cause is championed by an unlikely alliance of climate scientists, government agencies, military analysts, environmentalists, and forward-thinking business leaders like Anderson – the Greens – all of whom realize that we are heading for Big Trouble if we keep on going the way we have been.

On the other end of the struggle are the Browns: businesses who would rather fight than switch. The oil and gas industry dominates this faction, but they are by no means alone. All those whose livelihoods depend on our continued use of fossil fuels have found common cause in opposing efforts to curb climate change.

In the past several weeks, two utility companies – Duke Energy, which provides power to five states; and Alstom, a French manufacturer of power plant components -and aluminum giant Alcoa resigned their memberships in the American Coalition for Clean Coal Energy after revelations surfaced of forgeries the group perpetrated as part of its lobbying against climate change legislation.

This week, California utility PG&E made a similar move by leaving the U.S. Chamber of Commerce over the organization’s extreme stance on climate change. Three weeks ago, the Chamber called for a “Scopes monkey trial of the 21st century” to put climate change science on trial – a silly idea, since science is intrinsically a process of examination and proof; and strange choice of metaphors, considering that science won the Scopes argument.

Then again, it’s not called the U.S. Chamber of Sustainability. Would that we had one!

A House Divided

While those who stand to lose something waste their energy impeding our progress on the march to sustainability, those who stand to gain from it are going gangbusters.

As I discussed two weeks ago in my article “Welcoming China’s Energy Revolution, China has made aggressive and well-timed moves in the solar race. In only five years it has gone from being a negligible player to the world’s top producer of solar PV cells, according to a new report from the European Commission Joint Research Centre Institute for Energy. Worldwide solar module production increased by 80% in 2008 alone, with Asia and Europe taking the largest share while the U.S. share barely budged.

Source: JRC PV Status Report 2009. “In 2008, China became the global leading producer of solar cells with an annual production of about 2.4 GW, followed by Europe with 1.9 GW, Japan with 1.2 GW and Taiwan with 0.8 GW. It this trend continues, China might have about 32% of the world-wide production capacity by 2012.”

It must greatly amuse the Chinese to watch the Greens and Browns in the U.S. waste their energy squabbling over who’s going to pay for the transition to a sustainable climate, starving the country of investment in the clean energy solutions of the future while China is busy taking over the global PV market and implementing policies that will soon take it far beyond the U.S. in meeting climate change and renewable energy goals.

Indeed, the U.S. is fighting itself at every turn, offering more incentives that will increase CO2 output than those that would curb it.

Last week, just days before President Obama would warn at the United Nations that the “irreversible catastrophe” of climate change must be avoided, the Environmental Law Institute issued a new report finding that U.S. subsidies to fossil fuels ( billion) were over two-and-a-half times as great as those it invests in renewables ( billion). Of the latter portion, traditional renewables received only billion, while corn ethanol – a net energy loser – got billion.

The OECD also issued a report last week estimating that eliminating fossil fuel subsidies alone would cut emissions by more than 10% by 2050. I suspect the two reports had something to do with Obama’s call on Wednesday of this week to “work with my colleagues at the G-20 to phase out fossil fuel subsidies.”

As of this time, however, the madness continues. Pending House legislation sports tens of billions of dollars of incentives for so-called “clean coal” technology, which does not exist commercially, but has no hint of a feed-in tariff (FiT) – the primary impetus behind Europe’s stunning renewable energy growth.

As I have written previously, FiTs have been responsible for an explosion of renewable energy in over 37 countries and put them on track to meet their carbon emission reduction goals. But instead of following those examples, the U.S. is fixated on a backward approach to the climate problem: a highly corruptible and ineffectual cap-and-trade mechanism that puts the focus on what comes out of the tailpipe instead of what goes into the engine. (Notable exceptions to this are Gainesville, which has adopted a FiT, and San Antonio, Los Angeles, and Sacramento, which are considering one.)

A new research note from Deutsche Bank points out that under Germany’s FiT the share of electricity supplied from renewables grew from 6.3% to 14% and created 300,000 new jobs, but the program’s cost only contributed between 3% and 4% to the increase in electricity prices from 2004 to 2006.

Over the same time period, the fraction of renewable energy in the U.S. actually fell from 10.1% to 9.4% while the Browns fought it tooth and nail. Job creation was anemic, electricity prices still rose, and oil imports continued to increase.A Case Study in Failure: California

As usual, California offers a useful example of how backward the U.S. approach is to formulating energy policy.

A recent showdown occurred over a bill that would raise California’s renewable portfolio standard (RPS) from 20% by 2010 to 33% by 2020. Governor Schwarzenegger threatened to veto the bill because of a provision that would require the power to be generated by plants connected to the California grid – an attempt to keep the projects in-state and limit imports – calling it “protectionist.” Then he proceeded to issue an executive order to the California Air Resources Board establishing the new 33% RPS by mandate.

The RPS approach, which favors utility-scale projects, has already failed to yield the desired results. California’s three big utilities will almost certainly fall short of meeting the existing 2010 goal, with laggard San Diego Gas and Electric currently getting only 10% of its electricity from renewables. (I can also tell you firsthand that the one residential solar project I did in SDG&E territory was a slow-moving absolute nightmare of confusion and paperwork compared to the projects I did in PG&E territory.)

At the same time, an approach that actually works continues to meet resistance.

California’s net metering law, which requires utilities to give credits to customers who feed renewable power back to the grid, is currently capped at 2.5% of the total load. A new bill would have raised the cap to 5%, but was stalled when the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IEBW) successfully inserted an amendment that would have permitted only contractors with a general C-10 electrician license to install projects larger than 250 kilowatts, excluding numerous non-union contractors with the solar-specific C-46 license. (The IEBW has attempted the same strategy several times in recent years, impeding the progress of pro-solar policy while gaining nothing for itself.) If the net metering cap is not raised, there is a distinct possibility that PG&E will hit the existing cap and trigger another slump in the long boom-and-bust history of solar.Time to Choose

If the U.S. were serious about making progress on climate change and renewable energy, it would put aside the jockeying of narrow-minded interest groups and implement long-term policies with proven records of success.

As I see it, the effective policy approaches are stable, transparent, long-term, and simple:

1. Forget about cap-and-trade and RPS, and incentivize clean energy with a generous and long-lived national FiT modeled on successful programs elsewhere. 2. Shift all subsidies for brown fuels to green fuels, with priority given to those with the highest net energy (geothermal, solar, and wind), instead of those with the best lobbies (corn ethanol). 3. Level the playing field between rooftop and utility scale solar by removing net metering caps, allowing utility customers to put as much excess renewable energy onto the grid as they can generate. 4. Tear down the barriers between statesand utilities, and create a national market for renewable energy.

Above all, we should stop framing our decision-making around short-term cost arguments, and accept the fact that all of the energy solutions of the future will cost more than those of the past. The cost of fossil fuels will continue to rise because the best resources have already gone up in smoke, and what remains is progressively more expensive to produce. The cost of renewables will cost more in the short term, but fall as the technologies mature.

Besides, ample research has shown that in the long run – once the true costs of all fuels are recognized, with nothing externalized, and cost-benefit analyses are extended into multi-decade time frames – renewable energy wins hands-down over fossil fuels.

With which would you rather align yourself: a dirty, mature industry going into decline that still claims to need billions in public support… or a clean, new industry that’s growing at 40% per year, with no limit in sight, and a reasonable expectation of being able to get along without subsidies in 20 years or so?

Beyond renewable energy’s long-term benefits – a more resilient economy, jobs created indirectly, better public health, a reduced burden on the national coffers for imported oil (on the order of 0 billion for this year in the U.S.), and other indirect and intangible benefits – there is the straightforward imperative that we begin the urgent transformation toward true sustainability.

The short-term cost argument is tired, and we have already delayed too long. It is time we evaluated our choices in terms of the wealth and welfare of future generations, not just the personal net worth and power of today’s kings of industry.

At this crossroads in history, the United States can either seize the opportunity to reinvent itself and secure a prosperous future, or allow an unproductive process of selfish bickering to lead us further down a dead-end street. We can apply our vaunted ingenuity and innovation to the renewable energy challenge, or watch our fortunes continue to slide while the rest of the world kicks our butts.

We do have a choice.

Until next time,

Chris

Develop a Safe New-Age Implying the Magnus effect on Practical Life : Eco Articles

You may know that I am always on the
search for fun ideas on
Alternative Energy Sources. This evening, I
came across a really
amazing information that talks
about Eco Energy Sources from a new
light. Today’s article is titled Develop a Safe New-Age Implying the Magnus effect on Practical Life .

Article by Issac Gates

The current traumatic situation of the mother earth is indicating dangers in the up-coming years. Modern requirements have raised problems where the amount of fuel that was saved beneath the surface of the earth is gradually finishing up. That means within some years there will be no fuel left for the use of the upcoming generations. This is depicting a picture of slow poisoning that means it will gradually end up the lives of the existing souls. Now, the conscience of mankind is searching for a way out. It has attracted our sight towards wind power history where using the physics theory of Magnus effect and applying it on the practical fields, scientists are trying to find a substitute of fuel. The increasing amount of heat due to global warming, the increasing amount of pollution due industrialization, the growing population and the new innovations in the field of science has brought a threat on the living beings of the earth. Moreover, the plummeting amount of fuel is snatching the mental peace because these all are denoting superb disturbance in the environment. Here, reducing the use of fuel that is extremely harmful for the atmosphere we can hold the situation a bit. Until we are being able to invent new substitutes we cannot do this. It has become necessary to know about wind power history through which we can imply the formulas of Magnus effect and invent a way out to avoid the threats. After knowing why it is important to be acquainted with about wind power history we should move towards to get knowledge on what is it actually and how it can be merged with Magnus effect theory to have fruitful results? Fuels are used for driving vehicles, running machines, developing electricity and producing many useful products. It is a kind of impossible living without these things. LPG and CNG are replacement of fuel for vehicle running but what about the production of electricity? There are no alternatives of it. Henceforth, wind power can be of real use. If we consider wind power history, we can notice that it was actually invented centuries ago. Previously, it was used to pump out waters or grind flours. But, after some research it was found that using the wind power and spinning the blades of wind mills electricity can be produced. If we go through the theory of Magnus effect we can see it is also about spinning. In the theory, it is said that a spinning thing experiences perpendicular force to the line of motion. Now-a-days flying machines and ships are using Magnus effect to create motion or lift with a cylinder that is rotating. This notifying that replacement of fuel is coming up in terms gradually. This is good news for all of us. Following the shells and bits of Wind power history and improving the errors we can land to a new era of hope which can prevent the demolishing condition of the atmosphere of earth. New ray of hope can bring new meaning of existence, so why not save the planet for the next generation!

Various Cost effective and High end Solar Heating Solutions : Eco Articles

I am always on the
search for good articles on
Alternative Energy Sources. This evening, I
ran into a really
excellent information that talks over Eco Energy Sources from a new
light. Today’s is titled Various Cost effective and High end Solar Heating Solutions .

Article by Croan Cottages

Pro-environment solar energy based solar heating solutions such as solar geysers, solar water heaters, and heat pumps and others can now be powered using the right kind of solar panels that are often installed strategically on the roof.

Solar heating solutions that inter alia include solar geysers are apt for the conservation of energy for these are based on exploiting the that is available aplenty. Nevertheless, using the solar panels to heat up water is quite a norm today in the most of the advanced countries and even becoming popular in the energy-starved countries that are exposed a lot to the Sun. Moreover, solar heating solutions are the right solution in comparison to the electricity based geysers that are mainstream in all major advanced societies.

Solar energy based solar heating solutions help a lot not only in saving the money paid as electricity bill but also contribute in pro-environmental development. Nevertheless, when the solar panels are used to provide heating up the water in house or commercial complexes, the users are able to avoid discomfort that power-cuts bring up. Apart from helping out the users avoid hefty electricity bills for the electric heaters, the solar heaters also play cardinal role in avoiding any sort of damage that have been caused in case electric heaters were in use.

Use Solar Energy and Reap Maximum Advantages

Efficiency is a major factor that contributes in the huge popularity that is being gained by the based heating solutions i.e. the solar heaters are as efficient as are the electric ones albeit the earlier come at a fraction of the rate of the latter. Moreover, there is huge cost involved in the maintenance of the electric heating devices such as heaters and geysers as these are subject to damages caused by the over-use or fluctuations in electricity supply i.e. surges and sags cause severe damages. Thus, based solar heating solutions are becoming apt solution for the users who wish efficiency at any cost.

Solar panels are placed strategically on the roof or open higher place so that they absorb sun rays which in turn powers the solar geyser or solar heaters. One added advantage with the solar energy based solar heaters or geysers is that the even the existing electric heaters or geysers can be converted to solar ones. Thus, the current users of electric heating devices do not need to worry about buying the new solar energy based heating devices; rather, convert the same to the based heating solutions.

solargeysers4you.co.za, buying Heat Pumps in Pretoria to use Solar Energy for the benefit has become a reality now. Solar Heat Pumps and Solar Energy
