AC vs DC currents the same? : Eco Answers

You may know that I am non stop on the
lookout for informative info on
Alternative Energy Sources. This evening, I
ran into a really
sweet article that discusses Eco Energy Sources from a different
light. Today’s amazing post is titled AC vs DC currents the same? .
Question by ekawaguchi: AC vs DC currents the same?
I know that AC is “powered” electric current (ie house) and that DC is “stored” electric current (ie car). But other than that are they different? Is AC higher in voltage?

Yes, they are different.

If you think of electricity as a flow of electrons in a wire, then DC is like a steady stream of electrons flowing from one end of the wire to the other. There needs to be a stockpile of electrons on one side of the wire to keep the current flowing. When the stockpile is exhausted, current stops flowing; making the stockpile like the voltage of a battery.

With AC current, the conceptual model is the electrons sloshing back and forth periodically in the wire. There is no net flow of electrons.

In a way, if DC is like beads rolling down a hill, AC is like shaking a closed tube of beads — beads move from one side of the tube to the other and the energy is in the shaking.

AC voltage is not necessarily always higher than DC voltage.
