How is momentum conserved? : Eco Answers

Well I am always on the
search for informative videos on
Alternative Energy Sources. This morning, I
ran across a really
good piece of content that talks
about Eco Energy Sources from a different
light. Today’s fun post is titled How is momentum conserved? .
Question by Ramen Noodle: How is momentum conserved?
Or is it not? I am working this problem involving two cars. One is initially sitting at a red light, and the other car (driving behind the first) ends up hitting the car sitting at the light. It then says that both cars travel a certain distance, and that friction acts on the cars as they are moving those distances.

How is momentum conserved under these circumstances? I just don’t get it. Please cure my ignorance.
Or are the momentums only equal right when the moving car hits the car sitting at the light?

p_initial = p_final
m_1_i * v_1_i = m_1_f * v_1_f + m_2_f * v_2_f

The velocity is split between the cars, based on their masses, which is then reduced by the frictional force until the velocity is 0.

Momentum is ALWAYS conserved in collisions, but it is a vector, so you may have to break it into (p_x, p_y, p_z).
