What is Green Energy?
As oil prices continue to go up, a lot of folks are asking, what is green energy? Simply put, green energy is power that is derived from energy sources that are deemed renewable such as wind and power sources. Green energy includes those sources of power that impact the environment far less than the traditional means of natural gas or other fossil fuels. The “what is green energy” question will continue to be asked as the public becomes more and more aware of the alternate forms of energy available.
Green energy is:
(a) Renewable – Renewable means that once the source is used for energy, it is available to be used over and over again. Fossil fuels are finite. One they are used, they are gone. The wind will always blow, the sun will always shine and we can always grow more corn and other grains to produce ethanol.
(b) Clean – Most green energy sources produce fewer – if any – hydrocarbons that pollute the atmosphere. The generation of green electricity from wind turbines or solar panels produce virtually no green house gases that contribute to the warming of the earth.
(c) Potentially cheaper than other sources of energy once initial equipment costs are considered.
(d) The future power source for the planet – it has to be.
It’s easy to see why there has been such an upsurge in green energy interest the past few years. Technology is making it easier and easier to take advantage of these renewable sources of power. New technology is able to extract more power from the resources and almost every day, ways are being discovered to bring this technology into the homes and businesses that need it most. As the efficiency increases for these technologies, they are more likely to be used and the more they are used, the less expensive they will become.
When we’re asking about what is green energy, more and more often we are able to find answers to our energy problems in the answer to the question. Business, industry, government and consumers are all partnering to make green energy more abundant and more easily accessible than ever before.
We still have a long way to go before green energy will be the standard, but the important thing is that we are moving in the right direction. As a planet, our success in this is not really an option. We have to develop alternative sources to meet our growing energy demands. It’s best to do this before our fossil fuel sources are completely depleted.
If we continue to do our homework and ask questions, and if business, technology and government continue to stress development of these resources, future generations won’t have to ask, “what is green energy?”.
