This is for a ninth grade science fair, but all the experiments I found on the internet either required me to buy a motor or were very simple and did not fit well with the topic of the use of Hydroelectric power as an alternative energy source. For the fair I need either to do an experiment or have a model (of a dam or something else that produces hydroelectric energy), but I have no idea where to start to make a model either.

The thing is, in some countries, hydro-electric power is the main mode of producing electricity, not an alternative. Look at your own country, and you will likely find that this is one of the main sources of electricity.

What you might need to look at is what the electricity – the power – is used for. Generally, it’s to do WORK. So, suppose you look at WORK as the reason for having power. You could then build a model of, say, a flour mill, where running water moves a big wheel, and this wheel connects to gears and so on to shift a bigger wheel that grinds the flour.

Alternatively, look up “KaraKuri”. There’s a beautiful book that shows how you can make card models that allow you to turn a wheel, and get movement of a piston/rod. The book has the instructions for many different pieces, as well as some demonstration pieces that look good. You could then demonstrate that hydroelectric power is based on these models to convert physical movement into electricity.
