The fear that fossil and other non-renewable sources of energy would soon run out has pushed experts to scramble in educating people about the necessity of shifting to a renewable energy source for daily consumption. In recent years, there is an emphasis on developing renewable energy source such as solar, wind, and water, among others. As with anything, pessimists have raised various arguments against renewable sources of energy, from being expensive to questioning the efficiency of converting renewable energy to electricity that consumers can freely use in their homes or businesses. These arguments notwithstanding, it is clear that the real problem is lack of understanding rather than doubts about the capacity of renewable energy to deliver the same efficiency as fossil fuels and other non-renewable sources.Solar, hydro, geothermal, and wind power are some of the most popular types of renewable sources of energy being harnessed today. Unfortunately, however, despite the popularity of these renewable sources, consumers and even experts are still in the process of understanding how they work. Techniques that are currently being utilized to produce energy using these sources are still far from the efficiency that people have been used with fossil fuels and the like. Cost-effectiveness has always been the biggest stumbling block to harnessing any renewable energy source, be it solar, hydro, geothermal, or wind.Indeed, developing any of the mentioned renewable sources of energy can be several times more expensive than a non-renewable one. For instance, converting solar energy into electricity is still very expensive. While the sun’s energy is free and renewable, setting up solar panels is very expensive. Even companies that use solar energy sell their electricity at a significantly higher rate compared to fossil fuel-produced electricity. In addition, there is also the difficulty of choosing the proper location of a solar collection facilit y. Because solar energy can be collected during daytime, it is important to choose a location where the sun shines most of the year. That being said, solar energy still turns out cheaper in the long run and has clearly less environmental impacts, which are mostly attributed to the production of solar collecting devices.The same concerns-cost-effectiveness and environmental impacts-have also been raised against other types of renewable energy source. However, in recent years, those concerns have been addressed and some portions of the United States are starting to generate larger quantities of electricity through renewable sources. For instance, wind power has been growing rapidly as a reliable and clean source of energy. Wind turbines are known for producing clean energy. Fears of massive fatal collisions between birds and wind turbines have turned out to be unfounded. In addition, complaints about the noise by the wind turbines of old have been largely eliminated by the improve ment in technology and engineering techniques.In the one hand, various types of renewable energy source are still considered expensive compared to fossil and natural gas fuel sources. However, in the other hand, it is also clear that the sustainability of any renewable energy source and its other positive attributes weigh more than the negative, yet temporary, elements associated with these environment-friendly energy sources.
