For anyone not in the know when it comes to buying kitchen appliances the decision can quite easily become overwhelming, as the modern day presents us with an array of different models all with different sizes and features. If you are thinking of replacing your washing machine then there are a few simple points that should be considered so as to ensure you make the right decision.
Capacity – It is important that you consider how much space you will need in your washing machine, how big do your loads tend to be? If you find that you rarely fill the washing machine then it could be a good idea to look for a model that has a half load setting. Generally the capacity of a standard drum is somewhere between 5kg-9kg, and in most cases this sized drum will be sufficient, those with a large family may find that a 12kg drum is more useful.
Size – Obviously you need to consider how much space you have in your kitchen or your utility room for this appliance. The majority of washing machines are deigned to fit under a standard kitchen unit however this can vary from machine to machine, furthermore the depth is something that can be quite different too. If you’re really short on space there are narrower designs. Similarly some of you may find that a top loading design is more appropriate for your particular needs.
Energy efficiency – This is an important factor to take into account as it can be the difference between a significant amount of money on your energy bills. Trading standards now have an Eco Energy labelling system that will help you identify the energy efficient products, ideally you want a machine that is graded A or higher. Also it is useful to remember that these grades only apply to a product when it is used at its most energy efficient setting.
Spin speed – Spin speeds can vary from 800rpm to 1600rpm, some models will even allow you to adjust this with various different wash cycles. An increase in 200rpm will result in 15% dryer clothes, however remember that higher spin speeds may shorten your machines life and cause unwanted noise.
Guarantee – Most washing machines will come with a 12-month guarantee. Some manufacturers may offer a longer guarantee or an extended warranty for an additional fee. This can prove to be useful, however remember to check if you are covered for parts and labour, or repairs could be expensive.
